Literacy Our Literacy program consists of Reading, Writing and Spelling. We run Reader's and Writer's Workshops, conduct "Sounds Write" for our junior unit and "Words Our Way" in the Middle and Senior Unit. We instil a love for reading at WPS and all classrooms are equipped with Classroom libraries that are organised by students at the beginning of each year when establishing Reading and Writing communities.
Numeracy At WPS we use open-ended, rich numeracy tasks to engage our students. We try to relate our numeracy to reality and allow students to work through tasks collaboratively and creatively. We have many resources to help supplement our numeracy lessons and it is evident that our staff and students have a great love for numeracy.
REACH- Social Emotional Learning With the new addition of our REACH values, we have scheduled weekly lessons to focus on these values and what that means as a learner, but also a member of a wider community. We also use our REACH lessons as a focal point for our assemblies.
Inquiry We use an amazing program called MAPPEN that enables our students to experience Science, History, Geography, Civics and Citizenship through interactive and engagement lessons. We also compliment this unit with immersive excursions and performances.
STEM STEM is an approach to learning and development that integrates the areas of science, technology, engineering and mathematics. Through STEM, students develop key skills including:
problem solving
creativity
critical analysis
teamwork
independent thinking
initiative
communication
digital literacy.
Italian At WPS every student from Foundation to Grade 6 studies at least one hour of Italian language each week. Students are encouraged to reflect on their own culture and language, make connections, compare and contrast their life with life in Italy. This LOTE session immerses students in Italian through instructions, reading stories, viewing and listening activities, and builds the students’ comprehension and confidence. Students are encouraged to speak in Italian and apply their learning in a number of situations and activities such as role play, dialogue, performance, singing with actions, reciting and games
Physical Education The domain of Health and Physical Education provides students with knowledge, skills and behaviours to enable them to achieve a degree of autonomy in developing and maintaining their physical, mental, social and emotional health. This domain focuses on the importance of a healthy lifestyle and physical activity in the lives of individuals and groups in our society.
Music/Drama The Music and Performing Arts program provides an engaging, creative and encouraging environment for all students to learn, perform and love the Performing Arts. There is a strong focus on singing, with each lesson beginning with a variety of songs, movement activities and instrument playing. Our classroom teachers ensure this is a part of their weekly planning.
Art We have a Visual Arts Coordinator that ensures each class are experiencing visual arts throughout the week. Students develop their creativity and imagination as well as refining their practical and fine motor skills. They learn to make choices when experimenting with materials, tools and techniques.
